Same Day Dentures

Smiling is an extremely important part of day-to-day life. Sadly, when people lose their teeth, they are less inclined to smile—which can affect their mood and overall confidence. If you have a significant amount of missing teeth that are affecting your ability to chew, bite and smile, speak with your dentist about same day dentures.

What Dentures Are

Dentures are prosthetics that are used to replace natural teeth. These prosthetics are generally made with acrylic, and may also involve the use of metal to secure the dentures in place (which is often the case with partial dentures).

Why Dentures?

Dentures have a myriad of benefits, and can change a patient’s life for the better. Not only do dentures provide cosmetic benefits, but they also help to rebuild self-esteem and self-confidence for patients that have missing teeth. Dentures also have major functional benefits. With dentures, patients are better able to bite, chew and even speak. Dentures also help to maintain the integrity of a patient’s face, and help to avoid deterioration of the gums and even the jawbone.

Partial or Full Dentures?

The choice between partial and full dentures is a decision that you and your dentist will make, depending on the amount of available, healthy teeth that you have remaining. If you don’t have very many teeth left, the dentist may decide to pull the remaining teeth and provide you with full dentures. If there are still a reasonable amount of healthy teeth, though, a dentist may decide to go with partial dentures. These appliances are attached to the healthy teeth, often with metal clasps that allow the patient to insert and remove the partial dentures when necessary.

Immediate or Traditional Dentures?

Depending on the scenario, dentists may be able to offer either traditional or same day dentures. Both of these options have their benefits. While traditional dentures are tailor-made with the patient’s specifications in mind, they also take time to make. With traditional dentures, there also may be a period of healing after the extractions that is necessary before the dentures can be placed. Immediate dentures, on the other hand, can be placed immediately. This means the patient gets to leave the office with dentures the same day! With same day dentures, patients are able to bite, chew and smile right after leaving the dentist’s office.

It’s important to note that immediate dentures will need to be adjusted during and after healing has occurred. Same day dentures are also generally a more expensive option. Speak with your insurance company about whether or not same day dentures are covered.

Schedule an Appointment

If your teeth are becoming loose, are falling out, are damaged or have already fallen out, schedule an appointment with your dentist. Once your dentist decides you are a candidate for dentures, they may offer you the choice of traditional or immediate dentures. If you decide to go with same day dentures, you can leave the dentist’s office with your brand new dentures!
